We recently had the chance to visit the iconic St. Louis Gateway Arch, and it was an experience we’ll never forget. Standing beneath the massive stainless-steel structure felt surreal—especially after seeing it represented in miniature card form on our game table. It was like stepping into a scene from a game we already loved.
Here’s what our visit was like, what makes Gateway Arch so unique, and how PARKS inspired our curiosity to explore it.

Gateway Arch National Park: A Monument Like No Other
Gateway Arch is unlike any other national park in the system. Instead of sprawling forests or mountain trails, it’s a sleek, modern monument with deep historical significance. Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the Arch commemorates the expansion of the United States westward—and it marks the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Here’s what stood out during our visit:
The Scale Is Breathtaking
You don’t realize how massive the Gateway Arch is until you’re standing underneath it. At 630 feet tall, it’s the tallest arch in the world and an incredible feat of engineering. Even our kids were in awe—craning their necks back and trying to capture the whole thing in one photo.
The Tram Ride to the Top
We took the small capsule-style tram to the top of the Arch, and it was both thrilling and slightly claustrophobic—but absolutely worth it. The views of St. Louis and the Mississippi River were incredible. It was great seeing the city from such a unique view.
Museum of Westward Expansion
Underneath the Arch is a modern, interactive museum that walks you through early American frontier history as well as St. Louis history. There are exhibits on indigenous cultures, westward migration, and the role of St. Louis as the “Gateway to the West.” It added so much depth to the experience—not just sightseeing, but storytelling of American history.
A PARKS board game and the Gateway Arch Card, Brought to Life
When we got home, we immediately pulled out our PARKS box and searched for the Gateway Arch card.
There it was—colorful illustrated in an artful style 1 of the 63 National Parks cards. The image captured the grandeur, but after visiting. It wasn’t just a card anymore—it was a memory. A moment. A place we stood together as a family.
In the game, visiting Gateway Arch might earn you points. In real life, it gave us a moment of connection—to history, to architecture, and to each other.

How the Game Sparked Our Curiosity
Before PARKS, Gateway Arch wasn’t really on our radar. We knew it existed, sure—but it didn’t stand out among the big-name destinations like Yellowstone or Yosemite.
But drawing that card during a game night made us pause:
“Wait… this is a national park?”
“It’s in St. Louis? That’s not far!”
“What’s it like in person?”
And just like that, a board game turned into a travel idea. That’s the power of games like PARKS. They open your eyes to real places, inspire questions, and sometimes nudge you to go see something for yourself.
Bringing the Game Along
Here’s a fun idea: take your PARKS game with you on your national park travels!
You could even set a goal to:
- Collect a photo with every park card you’ve visited in real life
- Keep a travel journal alongside your board game log
- Use the cards as inspiration for planning your next trip
What Gateway Arch Taught Us (Beyond the Meeple)
Visiting a real-life park from the game deepened our appreciation for both the game mechanics and the real-world stories behind them. It reminded us that the best games don’t just entertain—they inspire.
And PARKS, with its blend of stunning art, seasonal strategy, and respectful nod to nature, does exactly that.
If Gateway Arch isn’t already on your bucket list, we highly recommend adding it. Whether you’re a gamer, a history buff, or a curious traveler, there’s something special waiting for you under the Arch.
